Dan Haar: 5,000 Conn. jobs? Diplomats from China, Mexico, Canada decry tariffs

Prices for metal have climbed in the last few weeks at Glyne Manufacturing Co. in Stratford, a small maker of aerospace parts with about 20 employees. “I can’t necessarily tell if it’s the effects of tariffs or the people providing us with material are increasing prices,” said Ben McGalliard, whose family owns the business. “We’re a small player in this market... It’s sort of been a problem at this point.” Sort-of a problem, not a full-blown crisis. Hard to sort out since the supply chain for aerospace materials, as with so many industries, is truly global. Similarly, Terex Corp., the Westport-based global manufacturer of cranes and other materials handling equipment, sent a letter to customers in March, saying the newly imposed U.S.

Candidates agree on importance of arts but still keep party loyalties

NEW HAVEN — Ned Lamont and Tim Herbst agree on something: that educating children extends beyond the school day and it should include the arts. “I’m as surprised as you are,” Herbst told an audience of about 150 arts and culture advocates. It’s not a revolutionary idea. But that Lamont, the endorsed Democratic candidate for governor, and Herbst, arguably the most conservative Republican running for the same office, could find common ground was the result of a forum that forced five candidates to go off script from their usual talking points.

Zoners revise Bridgeport’s booze rules

BRIDGEPORT — Persistence has definitely paid off for Michael DeFilippo. He had to win three — Democratic primaries between last September and this April before finally being elected to help represent the North End on the City Council. And two-and-a-half years after a Superior Court Judge shuttered Vitro’s, DeFilippo’s package store, DeFilippo on Monday won a lengthy battle to change Bridgeport’s booze laws, paving the way for his business to reopen. Specifically, the zoning commission voted to revise the rules for opening a new liquor store, including putting in place more detailed criteria for applicants to meet.

Court blocks 3D gun printing

WASHINGTON — In response to a request from Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen and seven other state attorneys general, a federal judge in Seattle issued a temporary restraining order Tuesday blocking online uploading of blueprints for plastic homemade guns. In a statement, Jepsen hailed the ruling as a step to prevent making “these weapons easily available to those who might seek to harm Connecticut residents or to jeopardize our national security.” Connecticut and the other states plus the District of Columbia “look forward to continuing to aggressively make the case that these types of plans should be permanently barred from public dissemination," he said.

Shelton lawyer pleads to 5 more counts in child sex abuse case

MILFORD — Convictions continue to mount for a Shelton lawyer who admitted that he repeatedly sexually assaulted a family friend he was tutoring over seven years. Peter Kruzynski was back in criminal court Tuesday just a day after being sentenced to 13 years in federal prison for using his cell phone to entice the minor into sexual activity. This time Kruzynski, 51, formerly of Shelton and currently housed in a Rhode Island federal detention center, pleaded no contest to five state charges which carry mandatory prison sentences of 10 years and nine months. “This is one of the most disturbing set of facts the state has ever encountered,” Assistant State’s Attorney Amy Bepko told Superior Court Judge Frank Iannotti.

Vets irked by image of downed flag

BRIDGEPORT — When United States Navy Reserve veteran Bob Holm saw the photograph in Tuesday’s paper, he felt disgust. It wasn’t so much the image of dead fish washed up on the Bridgeport shoreline that bothered Holm, it was what lay on the sand nearby, and within the photo — an American flag. “What was the significance of taking a picture with the American flag laying with all these dead fish?” he said Tuesday afternoon. Holm, a 74-year-old Stratford resident, said the Connecticut Post photo was shown to him by two co-workers who are also military veterans, at the Stratford factory where they all work. All three were miffed, he said. “If I saw a flag on the ground, I would pick it up.

Steve Obsitnik did not vote for Trump

When it came to casting a ballot in 2016, Steve Obsitnik voted like a father, not like a future gubernatorial candidate. Republican Steve Obsitnik said Tuesday that he did not vote for Donald Trump in 2016. He wrote in U.S. Sen. John McCain’s name instead. “I have two daughters 14 and 16, and I didn’t like a lot of the discord going on,” Obstinik said in an interview Tuesday. “So I sided with a former Marine Corps Academy graduate.” Obsitnik is one of five Republicans running for governor in a year when allegiance with the president has become a kind of litmus test. While some other Republican candidates boasted in debates about their votes for Trump in 2016, Obsitnik has not previously spelled out his ballot choice.

Union grievance holds up new insurance plan in Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT — The city school district’s decision to sign onto the state’s employee health care plan is intended to erase $2.5 million from its anticipated 2018-19 operating shortfall while providing staff with comparable coverage and benefits. The Bridgeport Education Association essentially agrees, according to its attorney, but still has filed a grievance, maintaining the district violated its contract by not first negotiating the change. “The board doesn’t have the right to make the change unilaterally,” Eric Marshall, an attorney representing the teachers union, told the school board meeting in special session on Monday. “The only way for the board to move to the state health plan is through negotiations with the BEA.

Bridgeport students to get second shot at SATs

BRIDGEPORT — If scores on the state administered SAT’s to high school juniors in 2018 is any indication, city students need all the practice they can get. So the cash-strapped district will spend $37,572 to give 1,200 high school seniors another crack at taking the college-readiness test. The city school board, with six members present, voted unanimously to spend the money which they were told represents a $20,000 discount over what the College Board normally charges. City high school students already take the PSAT’s a practice test, in the fall of their junior year. The fee for that is covered through a state Alliance Grant. Monday’s approval will allow seniors to take the SAT again, during a school day in October.

Two adults, dog escape Ansonia house fire

ANSONIA — Two adults and a dog fled their Wesley Street home during a fire Tuesday morning. Ansonia Fire Chief Ed Adamowski said no one was injured in the blaze, but that nearly the entire home suffered fire, smoke and water damage. He said it is unlikely the residents will be able to move back into the home shortly, but that the house is not a “total loss.” The fire department was called to the two-story house around 6:30 a.m. Three units from Ansonia and a crew from Derby took about a half hour to extinguish the flames, Adamowski said. The fire marshal is investigating what caused the fire, but Adamowski said the flames appeared to start on the left side of the home.

Ex-lawyer gets 13 years in sex assault of youth

NEW HAVEN — Seven years of sexual misconduct with a young man cost a Shelton lawyer his license, $215,000 and 13 years of freedom Monday. "There are more questions than answers about what happened ... about what you are going to do in the future," U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer told Peter Kruzynski, the 51-year-old Jesuit-educated lawyer standing before him. "You're really a risk to go back, explore and cross the line again." But Kruzynski, a stocky gray-haired man wearing prison khakis, insisted he is not a pedophile. While addressing the judge, he turned to the dark-haired, bearded victim sitting in the courtroom with his mother, father and grandmother and apologized. His victim was 11 when the assaults started in April 2009.

New Milford police chief’s ‘expired’ contract still a mystery

NEW MILFORD — It’s been more than a week since the town administration decided not to renew the police chief’s contract — and questions remain about what led to the decision. Was it because of officer turnover? A budgetary decision? A relatively new mayor’s law enforcement philosophy? No one knows for sure — or at least, no one is saying. Mayor Pete Bass announced the decision not to renew Chief Shawn Boyne’s contract earlier this month when someone accidentally posted the job position on the police department’s web site. Bass, who could not be reached for comments despite several attempts during the past week, took responsibility for the error but didn’t give a reason for the move.

Connecticut’s “Woodstock” Canceled – Today in History: July 30

On July 30, 1970, Louis Zemel, the owner of Powder Ridge Ski Area in Middlefield had to tell a crowd of thousands that the scheduled three-day rock festival they had come for was canceled. Less than a year after Woodstock, an estimated 30,000 people had showed up for the July 31 through August 2 event, advertised as “A Natural Amphitheatre on Ski Slopes,” which was to feature everyone from Sly & the Family Stone, Fleetwood Mac, Joe Cocker, and Van Morrison to Jethro Tull, Janis Joplin, and Grand Funk Railroad. The youth of America started showing up a week ahead of time to camp on the slopes and complaints from area residents prompted Middletown Superior Court to order an injunction that prohibited the 30 advertised artists from performing. Many of those who arrived stayed in protest even though the state police had set up barricades on roads leading to Powder Ridge up to two miles away and utilities and other services had been cut.

Getting There: Political candidates need better direction on Connecticut’s transportation issues

I used to believe in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy and politicians. I actually thought the first two brought me gifts and the latter cared about me and my community. Well, those days are gone. We are now neck-deep in the primary round of campaigning for our state’s top officials and I hope you’ve been paying attention. The empty promises are piling up pretty fast, especially when it comes to transportation. A few candidates have been brave enough to endorse the idea of tolls while others just mouth vague platitudes like “we should have free-flowing traffic on I-95...” No explanations of how or who’d pay for it, just the pandering promises.

Odds against Latino students grow

Latino students are the fastest-growing student population in the state, but a new report says they are also far less likely to have teachers who look like them, be exposed to Advanced Placement classes or score well on standardized tests. The just-released Connecticut SAT results are a case in point. Just 36.4 percent of Latino juniors scored in the passing range on the English Language Arts portion of the test and fewer than 16 percent scored at grade level in math. That compares with more than half of white students who scored at grade level.

Mold concerns rise with sea level

In the last days of October 2012, Superstorm Sandy’s remnants pushed seawater over roads and through the first floors of Fairfield’s idyllic beach neighborhoods. The tide found nowhere to recede because the storm kept pushing more water against the closed tide gates. Some people left and some people, the tough old Yankees who’d seen storms before, stayed in their houses, recalled Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bisson, who was the unified commander, overseeing evacuations and the aftermath from a building that almost had to be evacuated. Within hours, the mold came and so did its musty odor.

Bridgeport cops fall behind on traffic-stop reports

BRIDGEPORT — A 1999 law targeting racial profiling by cops bears the name of the late state Sen. Alvin Penn, who represented Bridgeport and was a crusader against discrimination in policing. Now Bridgeport could lose state grants for failure to comply with that Penn Act and require officers record each traffic stop for analysis by a special racial profiling board. “Nearly all departments now electronically transmit this data on a monthly basis,” William Dyson, chairman of the Connecticut Racial Profiling Prohibition Project Advisory Board, wrote June 21 to Mike Lawlor, who oversees criminal justice policy and planning for Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

Joe Ganim redux, his record in Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT — When a handful of construction unions endorsed Mayor Joe Ganim for governor last week, one member — electrician Louis Soto — took the microphone to praise the Democratic candidate. “Everywhere you look you see progress,” Soto, a 39-year-old resident, told the crowd gathered along Bridgeport’s harbor front. Ganim, who is challenging businessman Ned Lamont for the party’s nomination for governor, is presenting himself as a leader who gets things done. That is a far more flattering description than the alternative — the too-ambitious politician who ran Bridgeport from 1991 until 2003 and both moved the city forward and seriously damaged its reputation.

Dan Haar:Truck-only tolls not how Conn. should roll

Volker Fieguth, a Canadian trucker originally from Germany, rested in his deep blue rig with a white trailer full of magnesium at an Interstate 95 rest area in Fairfield Friday night. He grew animated when I asked about the new electronic highway tolls in Rhode Island, aimed solely at the biggest commercial trucks. “It’s just another money grab,” he said. “We pay a lot of road taxes.” On his rare trips through Rhode Island, he said he’d have to eat the cost himself, as an independent trucker. It’s OK in that tiny, out of the way state, but Connecticut — that would hurt him badly.

Leisure and hospitality jobs increase as economy grows

Employment in Connecticut’s leisure and hospitality market is better than it’s ever been. In the last two months, the sector added 4,000 jobs statewide, recovering from a seven-month drought. Even as concerns surrounding wage growth persist, an growing national economy is helping lead a resurgence of the industry that consists of food service, hotel, and arts and entertainment. “What was declining came back, at least for two months, and the larger segment of accommodation and food seems to be growing,” said Andy Condon, director of the Office of Research for the Department of Labor. The industry started a downward slope in October as jobs steadily faded away leading into the spring.

Julie Jason: When it comes to retirement, start planning early

Last week, I was invited by a local company to speak to its “young professionals group” about finances. Of course, I had to talk about — you guessed it — retirement. Why would I want to talk to 20-year-olds about that time, decades away, when they will stop earning a paycheck? If you fast-forward to the future and ask retirees their regret, it is not starting to save and invest early enough. That regret is avoidable ONLY if someone older and more experienced brings it up. That may be your role in the life of a young member of the family. First, the reason for regret is that you can’t make up for lost time. And time is the essential element of the equation for building wealth.

Gun making drops off in state

WASHINGTON — Gun manufacturing companies came to Connecticut expecting a surge in gun sales after the Sandy Hook massacre, but they might not stay for long under a gun-friendly Republican president. Gun manufacturing companies rose in Connecticut from 15 in 2012 to at least 22 in 2016 - a roughly 46 percent increase — according to data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. But the number of Connecticut’s manufactured rifles, handguns, shotguns and revolvers actually dipped within the same time frame, with handguns taking the largest fall. In anticipation of higher gun sales after heightened safety concerns followed the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012, more gun manufacturers came to the state, according to ATF data.

The women running for lieutenant governor — the state’s second highest office, one breath away from the governor’s seat and the tie-breaking vote in the senate — have heard it all. Even in Connecticut, even in 2018, even in the midst of the Me Too movement. Shortly after she announced her campaign for lieutenant governor in February, Darien First Selectman Jayme Stevenson, 56, was on the campaign trail alongside more than a dozen Republican men running for governor. She spoke about serious issues — the opioid and drug crisis, which has touched her personally, and the state’s growing fiscal problems — and the experience she believes qualifies her to deal with these issues as lieutenant governor.

Ned Lamont’s cable business had an MTV connection

It was the early ‘80s and the rollout of cable TV was in its Wild Wild West era, driven by the white-hot MTV music video network. Ned Lamont, a young Harvard graduate, worked with Cablevision on its entry into Connecticut. He had his hand in other cable-related projects, too — including a report he filed on the industry in Kuwait. “That’s one of the things that prompted me to challenge Joe Lieberman many years later,” Lamont now says. He borrowed $250,000 from People’s Bank in Stamford, to buy a couple of “very small, beat-up private cable television systems in New York and Virginia.” “We fixed them up, made then functional,” Lamont recalls.

STAMFORD — Two of three Democratic candidates for attorney general said they had reservations about legalizing recreational marijuana while the third was a strong supporter of the move. The two state lawmakers running for attorney general, party endorsed candidate William Tong and challenger Paul Doyle, expressed reservations about legalizing recreational marijuana. Rival Chris Mattei, a former federal prosecutor who has never held elected office, strongly espoused legalizing the drug.

Negron shooting in Bridgeport divides Ganim and Lamont at debate

FAIRFIELD — The fatal police shooting of 15-year-old Jayson Negron in Bridgeport prompted an emotional exchange between the two Democratic candidates for governor Thursday, with Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim accusing Ned Lamont of “politicizing” the incident. With the family and friends of Negron present at a New Haven forum Wednesday, Lamont, the party’s endorsed candidate, suggested that Ganim should “stand up and take responsibility,” seeming to refer broadly to the incident and its aftermath. “I took an affront to my opponent’s comments that seemed to inflame a very difficult situation,” said Ganim Thursday at a debate hosted by Hearst Connecticut Media, Sacred Heart University and WSHU radio, at the university.

At immigrant reunification deadline, hundreds of families still apart

WASHINGTON - Federal officials said they were on course to meet Thursday’s court-ordered deadline reuniting all “eligible” immigrant families, but Connecticut lawmakers are wary of the hundreds of “ineligible” parents who’ve already left the country without their children. “Stunningly, federal immigration enforcement officials told many parents that the only way they would get their children back is if they left the country,” said Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn. “That is outrageous, false and cruel beyond comprehension.” U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw of San Diego issued a 30-day order to reunite 2,551 immigrant children and parents after a two-month international outcry from churches, public officials and businesses.

Asked by the judge if she agreed to all the facts of the case presented by Senior Assistant State’s Attorney David Applegate, Brown responded, “mostly.” The judge then told the 49-year-old Brown that he would impose a maximum sentence of two and a half years in prison when he sentences her on Sept. 28 but her lawyer, Alec Gulash, would have the right to argue for a lesser term.

Bond Commission approves toll study

HARTFORD — The state Bond Commission on Wednesday moved Connecticut a step closer to electronic tolls on the state’s highways and four lane routes. The commission authorized a $10 million study to look at tolling, prices, which roads could be tolled and how much money could be made. The state estimates tolling could bring in as much as $1 billion a year. "The undeniable truth is that our Special Transportation Fund needs a new, reliable revenue source," said Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who ordered the study. "While Connecticut made important adjustments to the STF in recent years, those fixes only addressed our immediate, short-term concerns," Malloy said.

Local restaurateurs thinking beyond the straw in eliminating plastic

STAMFORD — When city representative Bob Lion visited Teena’s Apizza, a new pizza place on Main Street, he was pleasantly surprised to see all the materials with his meal were recyclable — including his straw. According to Derek Furino, chef and owner of Teena’s Apizza, the restaurant, which opened last month, only uses recyclable products, including totally compostable straws made from plant material. “We just want to be eco-friendly,” Furino said. “We recycle and we’re trying to be on board with everyone else. I have children and I want them to have a safe environment as well.” The restaurant also recycles all bottles and cans and doesn’t use any foam. While biodegradable materials are more pricey, Furino said it pays off.

Sanitary Fair – Today in History: July 25

On July 25, 1864, the Stamford Ladies Soldiers’ Aid Society held a Sanitary Fair. Sanitary Fairs were established in response to the needs of Civil War soldiers beyond what the government could supply. The United States Sanitary Commission, a civilian organization, was authorized by the government in 1861. The primary objective of the commission was to collect supplies, provide support to soldiers’ homes, transport the sick, supply food, and to provide services to discharged soldiers. The Stamford Ladies Soldiers’ Aid Society held their fair to raise money for medical supplies for men in Union hospitals by selling a stamp that they had issued at a cost of 15 cents. These stamps were not the usual postage stamp but a drop letter stamp in which mail would be held at the post office and called for by the addressee.
