Max Reiss, Lamont spokesman, leaving administration

Max Reiss, the former television reporter who helped frame messaging for Gov. Ned Lamont for the past three years, is departing the administration next month to become a senior vice president at M&T Bank.

He is stepping down as communications director for Lamont in the final months of the Democratic governor’s first term to manage communications at M&T as it raises its profile after taking over People’s United Bank.

The transition of People’s branches to the M&T brand is scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 2.

Reiss, a former political reporter for NBC Connecticut, joined the administration in mid-2019, when Lamont’s approval rating plummeted as he pushed a highway tolls proposal that never came to a vote in the General Assembly.

The governor recovered in the polls once he abandoned the tolls plan and the administration became consumed in early 2020 by managing the COVID-19 pandemic, including daily televised briefings by Lamont.

Lamont, a candidate for reelection, has been leading in public polling.

“Particularly when it came to the state’s response and communications regarding the global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Max has been a passionate guiding force and a committed public servant,” Lamont said. “He is incredibly focused at everything he does, and he has become a close friend and collaborator.”

Bridgeport man arrested after suspected shots, police chase

BRIDGEPORT — A city man was arrested early Saturday after leading police investigating a potential shooting on a chase, according to Bridgeport police.

The city’s emergency communications center received a ShotSpotter activation on Center Street near the Greene Homes at 1:38 a.m., according to Scott Appleby, the city emergency management director.

Police arriving at the scene saw a person, later allegedly identified as Joshua Hernandez, 32, “placing a firearm” in his waistband, Appleby said.

He “proceeded to speed away on a motorcycle,” chased by officers onto Route 8, then the Merritt Parkway.

Milford police later informed the department that the individual had crashed in the city.

No gun was found at the scene, Appleby said.

“Bridgeport PD was able to identify the party, detain the party with the assistance of Milford PD, and the party’s motorcycle was towed to the police garage,” said Appleby. “On-scene reports indicated no parties were injured, and the party did not shoot at officers as reported in media outlets.”

Stratford police Capt. Frank Eannotti issued a statement Saturday morning, noting that town police were not involved in the gunfire.

Hernandez was charged with operating an unregistered vehicle, operating without insurance, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, engaging police in a pursuit, six counts of failure to obey traffic control signals and two counts of failing to obey a stop sign, Appleby said.

His bond was set at $20,000.
