CT state capitol police seize fake COVID vaccine cards at anti-vax rally

State Capitol Police have seized a box of dozens of fake COVID vaccination cards from the anti-vaccination rally that drew 4,000 people to the grounds of the Capitol Tuesday.

Officer Scott Driscoll said Capitol police are investigating but could not provide any further details. No one was immediately arrested in relation to the incident. Driscoll said his agency is the only entity investigating the fake vaccine cards, which were blue and in a box from Staples.

Legitimate vaccination cards are given by providers when they administer the vaccine.

The cards were on a section of pavement on the east side of the Capitol building, not far from the statue of the American Revolution hero, Col. Thomas Knowlton.

Posters surrounding the box of cards pointed to some of the reasons people turned out Tuesday ahead of the Senate’s vote on a proposal to remove the religious exemption for vaccines for public school children. One read: “Medical Freedom NOT Medical Tyranny” Another: “Your opinion is not my medical mandate.”

Connecticut’s Attorney General William Tong has warned of fake vaccination cards being sold on sites such as Twitter, eBay, and Shopify. Tong and 44 of his counterparts wrote a letter to the CEOs of the companies saying the cards pose a threat to public health and safety.

Businesses and entertainment venues across the country have begun to require proof of vaccination to enter.

Aid-in-dying proposal won’t go forward

A legislative proposal that would’ve enabled doctors to prescribe medication to a terminally ill patient in Connecticut to end his or her life will not go forward.

Tuesday was the deadline for the General Assembly’s Judiciary Committee to act on the aid in dying legislation, but a “significant majority” of the committee was “uncomfortable” advancing the bill, said Rep. Steve Stafstrom, D-Bridgeport, the committee’s co-chair.

The legislation would apply to mentally competent patients who have less than six months to live. Those on all sides of the issue agree its now unlikely to come up for a vote before the legislative session concludes in June.

“There are certain folks who outright object to the idea of it on moral, religious or other grounds,” Stafstrom said by phone Wednesday. “The other thing, and what’s important for the judiciary committee, is, as drafted, the bill seemed to have unintended legal consequences.”

The state’s division of criminal justice said in testimony that the bill “effectively mandates the falsification of death certificates under certain circumstances,” by allowing the signer of a death certificate to list the qualified patient’s underlying terminal illness as the cause of death as opposed to the medication used to end his or her life.

That would pose a problem for the criminal justice system, the division said, when faced with cases involving a potential murder prosecution if the cause of death is not accurately reported on a death certificate.

Under the bill, a person would be guilty of murder if he or she willfully altered or forged a request for aid in dying or coerced someone to complete such a request.

But...

Police: ‘Buddy the beefalo’ in good health after capture

PLYMOUTH — Buddy the beefalo, who spent eight months evading authorities, was doing “very well,” said Plymouth Police Captain Ed Benecchi Sunday morning after a visit.

Since Buddy was sedated so a veterinarian could do a checkup, Benecchi, who spent months tracking the animal, got his first up close look.

The veterinarian said that he was “in good health” and was “very athletic looking,” officails said.

The famous cow-bison hybrid, first escaped on Aug. 3, 2019, when he was being offloaded from a truck at a Terryville slaughterhouse, officials said. He has spent much of the past eight months roaming the area, occassionaly getting spotted by residents and surveillacne cameras.

After months trying to capture the 1,000-pound animal, authorities boasted last Wednesday that they had caught him.

“This was an eight-month adventure for the entire community — from those who spotted him, to the gentleman that fed him, and to the father, son and son’s friends who captured him,” Benecchi said last week.

Buddy was discovered at Sleepy Hollow Farm by 10-year-old Cody Pleil, grandson of Ron and Martha Rice, the farm owners. Pleil told his grandparents that he saw a strange cow while going to feed the other animals.

“My grandson goes down to the gate he goes, ‘Pop Pop, a strange cow is in with us,’ and I looked and I see the horns and I said, ‘We ain’t got nothing with horns,’” said Rice, who works as a custodian at Eli Terry Middle School in Plymouth.

Rice said wrangling the cow was dangerous.

CT businesses ask state to pay about $1 billion owed in unemployment taxes

Connecticut’s businesses on Wednesday called on the General Assembly and Gov. Ned Lamont to use federal coronavirus relief funds to spare firms as much as $1 billion in unemployment taxes.

The Connecticut Business and Industry Association, which leads the coalition, also said the failure to follow this approach during the last recession was a critical error that still haunts the state.

“It certainly hurt our recovery” in 2008 and 2009, Chris DiPentima, president and CEO of the CBIA, said during a late-morning, live-streamed press conference.

And if Connecticut businesses remain responsible for repaying the $1 billion debt the state expects to face in its unemployment trust fund, he added, “It will once again threaten job recovery.”

Connecticut, like nearly all states, has run up hundreds of millions of dollars in debt to maintain unemployment benefits since the pandemic began in early March of 2020.

The state Department of Labor has borrowed roughly $700 million from the federal unemployment trust to date, and the projections hold that Connecticut’s debt may exceed $1 billion before the majority of its population has been vaccinated.

The state was paying weekly benefits to more than 390,000 filers during the worst of the pandemic last spring, and the weekly caseload still tops 200,000. By comparison, Connecticut lost about 120,000 jobs during the last recession, which stretched from December 2007 through mid-2009.

To ease the burden on states, the federal government has waived interest charges on loans to support unemployment trusts.

Still, Connecticut fuels its unemployment trust with taxes on businesses, and business leaders said the state’s economy simply can’t recover if...
