Stratford volunteers place 1,500 ceramic poppies for Memorial Day

STRATFORD — The Town Hall green is filled with a deep red.

The Stratford community, led by a trio of art teachers from around the school district, has installed 1,500 ceramic poppies on the green in time for Memorial Day. The project, aptly named Operation Poppy, has been two years in the making.

“It was great for the community, coming out of COVID-19 and people being isolated and indoors. It was nice just to get people together,” art teacher Aubrey Booska from Eli Whitney Elementary School said Thursday.

Booska joined groups of students, fellow art teachers, town officials and veterans to install the poppies Thursday morning. She said the group was done by about noon.

She said teachers came out to the green, talked about the historical significance of the poppy and then guided their students on where to plant them.

“The kids were really excited making these,” Booska said.

The red poppy is a common symbol of a fallen soldier. The annual commemoration of lost veterans, Memorial Day, is coming up on May 30. The poppies will be in place until Tuesday, Booska said.

Once they remove the poppies, 151 of them will be donated to the Stratford Veterans Museum. The poppies set for donation have been tagged and will be on permanent display at the museum. They represent the 151 residents who have died at war, Booska said.

The remaining poppies will be sold at the Main Street Festival on June 4. Benefits from sales will go to the veteran’s museum and other charitable organizations. They will cost around $5 each, Booska said.

“I think it’s a great example of the tremendous support we’ve received in town,” Bill O’Brien, the Stratford Veterans Museum treasurer and Town Council member,...

Motor vehicle enforcement leads to firearms, narcotics arrests in Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT — Bridgeport Police made firearms and narcotics possession arrests following a motor vehicle stop on Friday night.

At approximately 10 p.m., members of the Bridgeport Police Department Narcotics and Vice Division were conducting proactive motor vehicle enforcement in downtown Bridgeport.

Officers observed a silver Infiniti I35 with an obscured license plate turn from Lafayette Square onto Golden Hill Street without utilizing a proper turn signal.

Seth Williams, 33, of Bridgeport, who was operating the vehicle, informed officers that he did not have a valid driver’s license, which had been suspended since 2007. He was also unable to produce proof of registration or insurance.

When Williams exited the vehicle, police said the officers saw narcotics in the operator/passenger area and placed Williams under arrest.

Subsequent to Williams’ arrest, police found 27 pills which tested positive for MDMA, also called Ecstasy.

Williams was charged with possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, illegal possession of a high-capacity magazine, criminal possession of a firearm, possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, failure to keep narcotics in the original container, falsifying a marker plate/registration, operating under suspension, and failure to use a proper turn signal.

Williams’ bond was set at $150,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

Jason Sampson, 33, of Norwalk, who was in the front passenger seat, was observed by police to have a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun with a high capacity magazine in the compartment of the passenger side door.

Stratford planning for Sikorsky Aircraft deal’s impact on local economy

STRATFORD — The town is preparing for possible job growth at the Sikorsky Aircraft plant following a state deal to keep them in Stratford until 2042.

Stratford’s main areas of focus are on the local housing market, supporting local business and infrastructure, according to Economic Development Director Mary Dean.

Gov. Ned Lamont on Monday signed a bill promising up to $75 million in tax incentives over eight years for Lockheed Martin subsidiary Sikorsky Aircraft, should the company win the government contracts to be the U.S. Army’s next supplier of Black Hawk or armed scout helicopters.

The deal will keep 8,000 jobs in Connecticut at minimum, Lamont said Monday. The deal affects more than 30,000 jobs, directly and indirectly, and 242 suppliers throughout Connecticut, according to state officials. Of those suppliers, 18 are located in Stratford.

Dean said that they plan to work with any local businesses or subcontractors who are seeing an uptick in business.

“We’ll work hard for the businesses to make sure that they have the capacity and the room they need,” Dean said.

Some measures of preparation have already been undertaken, Dean said. For example, the town instituted a job board on the Economic and Community Development Department website for local businesses to advertise their openings.

Dean mentioned the construction work done to improve the entrance and egress on Route 110, where Sikorsky’s plant is located, that was funded by a state urban action grant.

“Sikorsky is...

Founded by Bridgeport’s P.T. Barnum, Ringling Bros. announces comeback tour without animal acts

“The Greatest Show on Earth” is making a comeback featuring extraordinary humans and no animal acts five years after shutting down its three-ring circus, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey announced Wednesday.

Talent teams have already conducted auditions in Argentina, Mongolia, Ethiopia, France and the United States, with more than 1,000 performers applying to join a 50-city North American tour starting in September 2023, and international dates to follow, according to the owner of the historic circus, Feld Entertainment.

“For us, Ringling is about bringing the world’s talents to people’s hometowns,” the chief operating officer, Juliette Feld Grossman, told The Associated Press in an interview. “We are entertainment for everyone and it’s important that everyone who comes to the show finds something and someone that they can really connect and relate to.”

The company heard from many fans after ending its 146-year run five years ago following intense criticism over its use of circus animals, and has considered their comments while re-imagining how to “keep the franchise fresh and alive,” she said.

In the new production, audiences will become “co-collaborators” with the performers, bringing them closer to the action and creating a different experience with every show, she said.

Ringling also wants to “tell the personal stories of the performers,“ she said.

“Our performers dedicate their lives to doing oftentimes risky, very technically challenging and athletic performances, and they do it because they are passionate about it,“ she said. “And we want our audience to know more about them to understand how they trained, where they came from, what inspired them to create and develop this particular skill.“

‘Blame us’: Bridgeport cops ready to take blame on new law for ATVs, dirt bikes

BRIDGEPORT — City police are ready to take the blame if an ATV or dirt bike rider is unhappy at being unable to buy fuel at a local gas station.

The city has made it illegal to sell gas to them unless the vehicles are registered, with fines up to $250 for offending businesses.

Enforcement will start next month, officials said during a press conference at an East Main Street gas station Friday.

Police said they’ll hand out signs and stickers to every gas station so riders of the vehicles, which are illegal to use on public streets and sidewalks, won’t have an issue.

“We want the gas station owners to blame us,” Lt. Manuel Cotto said. “We do not want any conflict between gas station owners and the customers.”

Acting Police Chief Rebeca Garcia, a supporter of the law, said she hopes other communities will follow suit. Similar laws are on the books in New Haven and Hamden.

“Bridgeport is not the first, and I certainly hope that we are not the last city that will impose such an ordinance,” she said.

The acting chief said police would police would try to educate gas station owners first through community policing efforts, with fines as a last resort.

Cotto said cops were working on putting together a town hall event to answer questions about the new law, which exempts bikes mounted on trailers and all-terrain vehicles that have attached snowplows during mid-November through mid-April.

The rule was proposed earlier this year by City Councilwoman Maria Pereira and her council partner, Michele Small, and passed by the legislative...

Stratford parents, teachers and students rally for BOE funding

STRATFORD — Dozens of teachers, students and parents rallied outside Town Hall ahead of the monthly Town Council meeting Monday night, advocating for a fully funded Board of Education budget in 2022-23.

After an hour of near constant noise as cars honked in support, chatter and some occasional chanting, one resident stood at the podium and did not say a word for a full minute.

“I thought we should observe a moment of silence because that’s what it will sound like if a school is closed,” Lawrence Haddad said in the public comment portion of the Council meeting.

Superintendent Uyi Osunde said the district could consider closing a school in town among “significant reduction measures” in a letter to teachers obtained by Hearst Connecticut Media on May 4. The BOE’s budget proposal from the town may force the district to cut staff and programs.

Mayor Laura Hoydick’s budget proposed a $123.2 million budget, representing a 2.5 percent increase but more than $2 million short of the $125.7 million figure the BOE passed in its budget recommendation. Her budget lowers the mill rate from 39.47 in 2021-22 to 36.46 in 2022-23.

In a procedural vote, the Ordinance Committee voted 5-4, along party lines, to send the proposed budget to the Town Council, which will conduct a special meeting on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers. The town charter requires a budget be passed by the Council by Thursday.

The vote forwarded a townwide budget of $249.1 million, which includes $125.5 million for the town in addition to the BOE allocation. The town’s portion of the budget fully funds...
