Greater Bridgeport, Valley communities cancel COVID test handouts

With delivery uncertain for the 500,000 at-home test kits that the state had planned to deliver to municipalities Thursday morning, local officials began sending out messages overnight letting residents know that the planned Thursday afternoon handouts to residents were off.

Some communities such as Derby, had planned their distribution events for Friday and were holding out hope that they could proceed as scheduled.

Overnight, a message was sent to municipal leaders saying: “No test kit flight overnight. No distributions on Thursday will be possible. More info as received,” according to Gov. Ned Lamont’s office.

Lamont had hoped to get the test kits into the hands of residents before the New Year’s holiday.

The City of Ansonia posted the news on its Facebook page shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday. The city was expecting to receive 2,430 test kits.

“This afternoon’s COVID test distribution event at Nolan Field has been CANCELLED,” according to the post. “The cancellation is due to a delay in the shipment of the COVID rapid test kits ordered by the State of Connecticut. The delay will impact all CT cities and towns.”

Residents are urged to monitor the city’s social media pages for a new distribution time.

In Milford, Mayor Ben Blake also encouraged residents to stay up to date with the situation on the city’s Facebook page. The city was expecting to receive 6,390 kits and distribution would begin as soon as the kits arrived, Blake said.

“Milford emergency management officials are standing by ready to pick up Milford’s...

Hundreds welcome former Fairfield goalie home from cancer treatment

FAIRFIELD — It’s rare for hockey goalies to get hat tricks. But in a way, that’s what’s happened to Charlie Capalbo.

On Friday, the former goalie headed back to his home in Fairfield, in remission now for the third time in four years, or “the ultimate hat trick” as those rallying around him have dubbed it.

And while he still has a way to go to get to full remission, he wasn’t alone as he started the next part of his recovery.

A crowd estimated in the hundreds paraded from Jennings Beach down the road to the Capalbo home Friday afternoon, chanting his name, banging hockey sticks on the pavement and cheering. Many wore hockey jerseys with players from Fairfield, Fairfield Prep, St. Joseph’s and Fairfield University all visible among the “Capalbo Strong” and other hockey-related signs and clothing. A firetruck with a large American flag was parked outside.

“I was speechless,” Capalbo said outside of his home, which was decked out in red, black and silver balloons and streamers.

The parade came together in about four days. Susie Richards, a family friend, said it started when Capalbo’s mother, Jenny, asked if they could put together a welcome home banner for him.

“It grew organically from there, because the entire community wanted to eagerly welcome him home,” Richards said, adding the police, fire department and a number of people in the community quickly jumped on board for the surprise.

“We would like Charlie and the entire Capalbo family to realize how loved and supported they are by their community,” she said. “They have never been forgotten over the past 322 days. Just drive around town. There are sticks out everywhere and they’ve been there since the day he went to inpatient on Jan. 25, 2021.”

Two charged with murder in connection with 2013 disappearance of Bridgeport man

BRIDGEPORT — Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the 2013 disappearance of a city man.

According to police, Shawn Gibson, 45, of Hamden, was arrested Wednesday and was charged with the murder of Aryndel Castro, 24.

A second suspect, Terrance Boyd, 55, of Columbia, S.C., was also arrested yesterday in South Carolina.

Castro was reported missing in September 2013. The following spring, members of the Bridgeport Police Homicide Unit got involved in the case, investigating it as a possible homicide.

As of Thursday afternoon, Castro’s body had not been recovered, but police said “strong evidence” exists to believe that Gibson, with Boyd’s assistance, beat and choked Castro to death on the evening of September 22, 2013, in room #1 of a rooming house on Noble Avenue.

Police said the evidence also suggests that the two men then engaged in an elaborate clean-up effort, purchasing cleaning supplies at the Home Depot on multiple occasions and renting vans from Home Depot and U-Haul. They reportedly used these vans to move Castro’s body more than once in the days following the murder, police said.

During a post-arrest interview, Gibson acknowledged disposing of the body and agreed to cooperate with detectives to recover Castro’s remains.

Gibson is being held on a $250,000 bond. Once the extradition process is complete, Boyd will be brought to Connecticut and will also be charged with murder, police said.
