CT grew more diverse in last decade, Census shows

The white population in Connecticut declined precipitously over the last 10 years as the state grew more diverse, Census data released Thursday shows.

Though white residents still make up nearly three-quarters of the state, their numbers dropped by 10 percent in the last decade. At the same time, the Hispanic population surged by 30 percent and the Asian population climbed by 27 percent, while the Black population rose by 8 percent.

Overall, however, the state’s total population barely nudged upward in the last decade growing by less than 1 percent, the smallest gain of any state in the Northeast and the fourth smallest nationwide.

The state’s increasingly diverse makeup and its relatively slow growth are likely due to a white population that is growing older and having fewer children, said Mark Abraham, executive director at DataHaven, a nonprofit data cooperative.

“There's been a huge drop in the number of white children in Connecticut in the past 10 years,” he said.”It's mainly just because the demographics have shifted.”

Given that Asian, Hispanic and Latino populations are younger and are expected to continue having children, Abraham said the trend should continue.

More than half of all Connecticut towns, ranging from large to small, lost population, with the largest proportional decline found in the small town of Canaan, which had 12 percent fewer residents than in 2010. Its losses were almost all white residents. Somers, about ten times Canaan’s size, also saw a decline of 10 percent, mostly due to declines in the white population.

Stamford saw the largest population growth of any town at 10 percent over the decade, attributable entirely to increases among non-white residents. Hispanic and Latino...

Census data: Fairfield, Bridgeport, Shelton growing most among towns in region

The 2020 census data is in and Bridgeport remains the state’s largest city, even seeing its population grow since 2010, according to the newly released information from the U.S. Census.

And among greater Bridgeport municipalities, Fairfield, Shelton and the Park City itself saw the biggest increases in population in the past decade, according to the numbers released Thursday.

Fairfield’s population grew by 2,108 people from 59,404 to 61,512 between 2010 and 2020, an increase of 3.5 percent, the fastest growing in greater Bridgeport.

First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick said she wasn’t shocked people want to live there — and predicted the town’s population is even higher than it was when the census was taken last year.

“As a lifelong resident, I’m not surprised word is out that Fairfield is an amazing community to live in,” Kupchick said. “I’m sure that number is even higher over the last year since the census forms were completed, as we continue to see new families choosing Fairfield. We are a picturesque and historic coastal community offering urban-style amenities in a family-friendly suburban setting — we have it all.”

By total residents, Bridgeport, the state’s biggest city, grew the most among area municipalities, from 144,229 to 148,654, or about 3.1 percent.

That’s a significant rebound in population for Bridgeport, which dipped to 139,529 in 2000 before rising in 2010 — but is still far short of its 1950 peak of 158,709.

Superintendent of Schools Michael Testani said Bridgeport’s public school system, consistently among the largest in Connecticut, has seen improvements that make the city a more attractive place to live.

“I do think that the public schools over the last 10 years here in...

‘A place where people are kind’: Stratford’s St. James welcomes new principal

STRATFORD — The term “Catholic school” doesn’t usually conjure up an amusement park ride in the popular imagination.

Welcome to education in a time of pandemic.

“We most likely will be riding a roller coaster as new variants of the COVID-19 virus come and go,” Diocese of Bridgeport Superintendent Steven Cheeseman wrote in a letter to parents of parochial school students last week. “We must carefully monitor these trends and respond appropriately to the resulting ebb and flow created by these variant cycles.”

In the letter, Cheeseman offered a series of recommended guidelines for Catholic schools in the area — noting that they may need to be revised based on trends or state public health mandates — calling for children to wear masks when social distancing isn’t possible, but saying masks could be optional outside or when students are at desks and “spaced appropriately.”

The superintendent’s letter referred to an earlier message to parents that “indicated our desire to return to a near normal school year which included being mask optional.”

Catholic schools saw an influx of students last year after returning to in-person learning five days a week with fewer disruptions from quarantines and eschewing the hybrid model of public school systems. With a few weeks to go before school resumes, slots are once again filling up quickly, according to Meg Merwin, director of admissions, marketing and development at St. James in Stratford.

The school also recently filled its most important opening - principal - with Chris Robertson replacing Jack Lynch, who retired over the summer.
