STAMFORD — Stamford police are looking for a suspect after an attempted burglary last week. Police released surveillance footage Wednesday that showed the suspect, they said. The complainant described the suspect as a male that was about 5 feet 8 inches tall “with a dark complexion and very short hair with a medium build,” police said. D.C. Buzz: Himes says GOP memo misguided

As a member of the House intelligence committee, Rep. Jim Himes has read the dueling memos — the Republican one alleging FBI and Justice Department misconduct in seeking a warrant to wiretap a Trump campaign operative, and the Democratic response. It’s no secret Republicans are dying to redirect the narrative away from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Trump 2016 campaign contacts with Russia. But it remains to be seen whether the memo penned by committee Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Fla., will end up as a silver bullet or a self-inflicted wound. Himes, a Democrat, believes it to be the latter.

Yale study: People more optimistic about fate of those they like

Who hasn’t told a friend facing a personal hardship that “It will be OK” or “It will all work out”? And possibly, these well wishes actually believe their hopeful words. It seems that, when it comes to those they care about, most people can be wildly optimistic, even in the face of bad news. A new study by Yale University researchers backs up the idea people are willing to be overwhelmingly positive about their fortunes or those of a loved one — regardless of pitfalls such as disease or financial hardship. However, the research team, which also included members from the University of Oxford, found that most people are only this optimistic about the fates of strangers who possess certain admirable attributes.

Shelton hosts students from China

SHELTON — Michael Yu insisted his English wasn’t good but the high school sophomore had no problem begging off a doughnut or wowing his hosts with a couple of numbers on a piano. “I really can’t play well,” he insisted, before proceeding to pound rapid fire across on the keyboard. Students around him whipped out cell phones to capture the moment on video. Shelton High School Headmaster Beth Smith followed suit. It was the type of experience she was hoping for as 30 students and two teachers from Jianping High School in Shanghai spent Wednesday in-bedded at what is becoming their sister high school. “Very exciting,” Smith said.

Effort to register new Puerto Rican voters

HARTFORD — HARTFORD — Puerto Ricans forced from their homes by Hurricane Maria and now living here will be the focus of a new effort aimed at getting them to register as Connecticut voters. Secretary of the State Denise W. Wolf pups born at Beardsley

Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo has some howling good news — three critically-endangered maned wolf pups were born there Dec. 27, in a heated enclosure. They are the first children born to adult maned wolves Bonita (the mother) and Paulo. They are caring for the babies together, as is the norm for this species. This is a significant birth, as captive breeding can be difficult with maned wolves, and for the fact that this is the first time for this species at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo. According to a release from the zoo, Bonita has paid particular attention to the smallest pup in the litter, separating it from its litter mates to be sure it has time to nurse adequately.

Bridgeport hosting one-day flu clinic

Bridgeport is hosting a one-day free adult flu clinic from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the Margaret E. In light of all the hubub surrounding the flu, Bridgeport Health Director Bond is encouraging residents to get vaccinated. “The flu vaccine causes antibodies to develop that provide protection from different strains of the flu so that if you do get infected, the symptoms and impact will be lessened,” said Bond in a news release. Dan Haar: Anger, but not surprise for Dreamer watching Trump’s speech

Jonathan Gonzalez-Cruz prepared himself to feel anger and frustration as a Dreamer watching the State of the Union address. And President Donald Trump did not surprise the 21-year-old college student from Wallingford. Trump didn’t utter a single empathetic word for Gonzalez-Cruz and others of the 800,000 who were brought into the United States illegally as children before mid-2007 and gained some protection under former President Barack Obama in 2012. What Trump did say — equating the Dreamers to gang criminals — sparked ire across the country. But for Gonzalez-Cruz, Trump’s insult wasn’t just about the Dreamers’ fight to stay in the land where they were raised and the political showdown over it.

Frozen Reservoir Destroys Danbury – Today in History: January 31

On January 31, 1869, Danbury’s Kohanza Reservoir froze. At around 7 o’clock in the evening the icy surface broke, causing the upper Kohanza dam to burst, which in turn caused a flood surge on the lower dam. With both dams destroyed, the water once contained in the reservoirs flowed quickly and forcefully into Danbury.

By 1860 Danbury’s thriving hat industry employed almost 2,000 hatters in 12 factories. In order to turn animal pelts into felt, hat makers needed abundant amounts of water. To satisfy this demand the town built numerous dams and reservoirs, the first of which was the lower dam of the Kohanza Reservoir constructed in 1860. The earthen dam was 336 feet long and 27 feet wide, held 40 million gallons of water, and was located three miles from the town. To get the water supply into the town, residents built water lines from wrought iron, wood, and cement. By 1865, residents built the upper dam.

On the evening the dams broke, the force from the two reservoirs was so great that it carried ice floes, rocks, and trees with it. This deluge swept away houses and buildings and destroyed three bridges in a matter of minutes. Most tragically, the flash flood took the lives of 11 Danbury residents. Portions of both reservoirs still serve the residents of Danbury and are known as Upper Kohanza Lake and Lower Kohanza Lake. While other natural disasters, such as floods and hurricanes, have threatened the area throughout the centuries, the 1869 deluge remains the town’s single worst disaster.

Lawmakers question college consolidation plan

HARTFORD — Lawmakers have some of the same questions and concerns as faculty and students about a plan to merge the state’s 12 community colleges into one. “Can they even be called community colleges?” Sen. Mae Flexer, D- Killingly, vice chairman of the Higher Education Committee of the state legislature, asked of the plan during an afternoon long forum held at the state capital. “It’s a little bit of an oxymoron,” added State. Rep. Terrie Wood, R-Norwalk, questioning whether the consolidation will ultimately be beneficial to the state. “When you go to this big top down structure, you lose that autonomy, you lose that grass roots investment, you lose that individual voice,” Wood said.

DOJ: Shelton man pleads guilty to child porn charge

SHELTON — A Shelton man will face anywhere from five to 20 years in prison when sentenced after he pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of receipt of child pornography, according to the Department of Justice. On May 31, 2017, Homeland Security Investigations agents conducted a court-authorized search of the residence of Michael Hull, 60, of Shelton. During the search, the DOJ said agents seized 13 images and 126 videos of child pornography — some of which featured children younger than 12-years-old engaging in sexually explicit conduct. Further investigation, the DOJ said, found a video camera installed in Hull’s bathroom that recorded images of individuals, including children, who used his bathroom.

Klarides hints at run for governor

Themis Klarides sounded unimpressed with the current gubernatorial field Tuesday, the strongest signal yet that Connecticut’s top Republican female office holder could soon jump into the crowded race herself. But with the GOP just four seats away from taking control of the House, a run for governor would mean giving up a chance to become the first woman from her party to serve as speaker. That’s the political calculus that has been weighing on the House GOP leader from Derby for more than six months, leaving both allies and rivals in limbo. “I think it will take a certain kind of candidate to win a general election in Connecticut and I’m still looking for that candidate,” Klarides told Hearst Connecticut Media.

DOJ: Bridgeport man sentenced to 6 years and four months in prison

BRIDGEPORT — A city man who was known as the leader of a gang that tormented Bridgeport’s West Side more than 10 years ago was sentenced Monday to six years and four months in prison, the Department of Justice said. Robert “Pookie” Bowens, 34, of Bridgeport, will serve his prison term, followed by three years of supervised release, for illegally possessing a firearm as a previously convicted felon. City attorney proposes sewer fee reforms in Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT — The City Attorney’s Office has a challenge of sorts for City Council members who feel the process for collecting late sewer use fees is unfair: Get involved in those collections. City Attorney R. Christopher Meyer and staff members offered ideas at a meeting Monday to improve outreach to homeowners who have fallen behind on their bills, and to reduce the associated fees that can quickly mount and lead to foreclosure. One of those ideas involved alerting council members to constituents who have fallen behind on sewer use payments.

Lawmakers set to override Malloy veto

HARTFORD — The General Assembly - in a warm up for next week’s opening of its short session - on Wednesday will meet in a special one-day procedure aimed at crushing Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s recent veto of a Medicare Savings Program. It should be an easy lift for lawmakers, who approved the legislation on January 8 in votes of 130-3 in the House and 32-1 in the Senate. All that’s needed is a two-thirds vote in each chamber to restore income guidelines for more than 90,000 elderly and disabled participants in the state’s Medicare Savings Program.

Attorneys grilled on sewer fee collections

BRIDGEPORT — Attorney Juda Epstein, who helps the city collect delinquent sewer use bills — and sometimes forecloses on homeowners who cannot pay up — claimed he is not the heartless monster critics portray him to be. “I have tremendous empathy for every single person who’s in foreclosure,” Epstein told the City Council’s Ordinance Committee Monday. “My job is to not take anyone’s home. It’s to make them prioritize this debt and pay the bill.” Epstein’s firm over the years has done a lot of business with City Hall and Bridgeport’s Water Pollution Control Authority. And that has made him a target for a City Council that is investigating what it feels is an overly punitive sewer use bill collection process that needs to be reformed.

Chance of light snow from near-miss storm

There’s a chance of some light snow from a storm that will pass south of Nantucket tonight. The National Weather Service says “low pressure will develop off of the Carolina coast today, then track northeastward over the Atlantic tonight. The low will reach a point about 200 miles southeast of Nantucket overnight, then reach the Canadian Maritimes Tuesday. “The low will spread some light precipitation into the area today, mainly east of the Hudson River. It will likely start off as sprinkles or light rain, then change to snow by evening. The snow will taper off overnight, but there will be an additional chance for snow showers on Tuesday as an upper level disturbance tracks through the region.

First General Copyright Law – Today in History: January 29

On January 29, 1783, Connecticut became the first state to pass a general colonial copyright law, entitled “An Act for the Encouragement of Literature and Genius.” Printing books in the colonies got off to a slow start. At the time, many colonial authors still sent their manuscripts back to the established presses in England. The few printers operating in the colonies made their living printing proclamations, sermons, broadsides, and newspapers as well as by selling writing supplies, stationary, and imported books. Larger and lengthier works could be produced far more cheaply in London, and law books were almost the only printed books in the colonies before 1740.

But by the revolutionary era, authors became worried about protecting their rights. It was not uncommon for a printer, who had been paid by the author to print a set number of copies, to produce extras to sell on the side. Also, another printer might copy and sell the author’s book without permission. In October of 1781, Andrew Law, a singing master with ambitions to publish a music book, petitioned the Connecticut General Assembly regarding his volume, A Collection of the Best and Most Approved Tunes and Anthems for the Promotion of Psalmody. Law was granted an “exclusive patent” for a five-year period. At that time, patents were the only form of protection for an author’s work and legislatures generally granted these private bills for relatively short periods.

Another vocal advocate for copyright was Noah Webster, a Connecticut schoolteacher and member of the New York bar. He had completed the first volume of his three-part American textbook, A Grammatical Institute of the English Language. Webster, also concerned about safe-guarding his rights, sought protection for what would become known as the “blue-backed” speller. In 1782, he petitioned the legislatures in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut for general copyright protection. His efforts, however, proved unsuccessful.

Ultimately, it was John Ledyard who succeeded in securing the first general copyright protection, which set the precedent for other colonies to enact similar laws. The author of A Journal of Captain Cook’s Last Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, Ledyard petitioned the Connecticut General Assembly and was granted copyright on January 29, 1783. The General Assembly, instead of passing a private bill for Ledyard, issued the first general colonial copyright statute. It secured the rights to the author for 14 years with the ability to renew the copyright once. Nathaniel Patten in Hartford printed Ledyard’s book in 1783.

G. Fox & Co. Destroyed by Fire – Today in History: January 29

On January 29, 1917, at about 11:00 pm, watchmen discovered a fire on the ground floor of the G. Fox & Co. building complex located on Main Street in Hartford. The fire spread quickly and firemen had difficulty controlling the blaze. The building, constructed of brick, wood, and metal, burned for nearly 18 hours, and although no one was seriously injured in the fire, it destroyed the complex and its contents.

The building complex on Main Street had grown from a two-room store opened by German immigrant Gerson Fox in 1847. His small shop proved to be hugely popular and in just a few short years the store expanded, and with Fox’s son Moses on board, the business continued to grow to a 5-store complex by 1915.

G. Fox Department Store, Main Street, Hartford

G. Fox Department Store, Main Street, Hartford, 1918 – Connecticut Historical Society

The fire’s destruction in early 1917 left Moses Fox undeterred. The company hired renowned architect Cass Gilbert to design a new state-of-the art building. Gilbert’s neo-classical design for the G. Fox & Co. building totaled 11 floors and loomed over the street’s existing buildings. G. Fox’s popularity held steady through the first half of the 20th century, and Moses’ daughter Beatrice, who took over the presidency from 1938 to 1965, ran the company with integrity. A civic-minded and philanthropic executive, she was well-loved by her community. In 1965 the May Department Stores Company acquired G. Fox & Co., and in 1993 the flagship store in downtown Hartford closed for good.

For years, the former G. Fox building laid vacant and abandoned until private investors teamed with the state to rehabilitate it for use as the Hartford campus of Capital Community College, retail shops, and offices. Today, the restored building exhibits much of its original splendor and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Hartford’s Department Store Historic District.

Reel Lawn Mower Patent – Today in History: January 28

On January 28, 1868, Amariah Hills of Hockanum, Connecticut, received the first US patent for a reel-type lawn mower. In 1830, Edwin Beard Budding, an engineer from Gloucestershire, England, had received the first patent for a reel-type mower, a machine with a blade assembly that rotated around a horizontal axis. Also known as a cylinder mower, this type of grass-cutting machine had two large cast-iron rollers that, when pushed across the lawn, provided traction to an oversized gear that then rotated the spiral cutting device against a stationary cutting bar.

Hills applied for the first American patent based on a practical improvement he made to the spiral cutter by opening up the cylinder. He also provided for a unique means to adjust the cutter’s height and improved the attachment of the handle to the frame. Hills began developing his design in 1861 and by 1867 was manufacturing his mower at the Curtis silver-plate factory in Glastonbury. Hills sold the rights to the patent sometime in the early 1870s, and Caleb Talcott started manufacturing the design in 1871 at the Hills “Archimedean” Lawn-Mower Company in Hartford. The name “Archimedean” came from the resemblance of the mower’s spiral cutter to an Archimedean screw. The lawn mower was a huge success, and the “Charter Oak” model was advertised as “the most beautiful and perfect lawn mower in the world.”

Oldest College Daily – Today in History: January 28

On January 28, 1878, the first edition of the Yale News proclaimed, “The innovation which we begin by this morning’s issue is justified by the dullness of the times, and by the demand for news among us.” Such dry wit would remain a hallmark of the publication, which later took its current name, Yale Daily News. Today, this student-produced publication is touted as the oldest college daily newspaper in the US. Depending on how one qualifies the claim—continuously published, independently run, and so forth—other schools also profess having the oldest college newspaper. Dartmouth College, for example, published the first issue of its newspaper in 1799 but it was not a daily.

Priced at what its student publishers called the “somewhat exorbitant” sum of 5¢ a copy until they could secure its financial stability, the inaugural issue included announcements, advertisements, a short critique of a recent musical performance, doggerel, and short jokes. Some of the attempts at student humor appear less than amusing to contemporary sensibilities. Some rely heavily on shared knowledge that is no longer common in our own times or, in a few instances, invoke racial and ethnic stereotypes to deliver their punch. Still, some anecdotes, like the following, have stood the test of time:

Are these soaps all one scent, boy?

No marm, all ten cents.

If you have a junior in high school in your family, you may be planning to visit some college campuses over spring break. As college education is still one of the best investments you can make, it’s not too soon to think about paying for it. College graduates earn almost twice as much as those who end their formal education at high school, and the gap between high school dropouts and those who earn advanced degrees is even greater. Based on the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics data (third quarter 2017), the median income was only $27,144 for those who did not graduate from high school. William Douglas: A Colonial Hero’s Sacrifice

William Douglas was a successful merchant and military leader who settled in North Branford just prior to the Revolutionary War. Despite retiring with substantial wealth acquired through trade with partners in the West Indies, Douglas sacrificed most of his fortune, as well as his health, in service to his country.

West Indies Trade Brings Prosperity

Born in Plainfield, Connecticut, on January 27, 1742, William Douglas entered military service as a teenager—seeing his first action during the French and Indian War at the age of 16. He served under Israel Putnam and took part in the expedition that captured the city of Quebec in 1759.

After the war, Douglas moved to New Haven and became the commander of a merchant ship that sailed between New Haven and the West Indies. His success as a merchant allowed him to accumulate enough wealth to purchase 150 acres of farmland in Northford (now a part of North Branford) and settle into a quiet life there in 1772.

From Fort Ticonderoga to the Battle of Harlem Heights

Douglas re-entered military service, however, with the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. He served under Ethan Allen in the expedition that took Fort Ticonderoga from the British. He then raised a military company in New Haven in the spring of 1775 before being given command of a flotilla on Lake Champlain meant to deter a British attack from Canada. While serving on the lake, Douglas led a raid on St. John (known today as St. Jean) that captured large stores of provisions eventually used in the defense of Boston.

After returning to Connecticut for the winter, he was about to begin a political career (having been elected to the Connecticut General Assembly) when the Connecticut legislature offered him a commission as a colonel of a battalion sent to help defend the island of Manhattan. Douglas served in New York under George Washington, fighting in such famous battles as Harlem Heights and White Plains.

With the closing of the 1776 campaign, Douglas returned to his farm in Northford to recuperate. Months of endless battles and exposure to the elements caused him to lose his voice (which never fully returned) and brought on serious illness.

Having often used personal funds to aid in the colonial cause, Douglas found himself in dire financial circumstances in the months leading up to his death. He sold his property in New Haven but received payment in continental dollars, a currency that became virtually worthless. Despite his intentions to return to military service in the spring, Douglas succumbed to illness on May 28, 1777, at the age of 35. By the time of his passing, most of the fortune he acquired as a merchant was gone.
