HARTFORD — HARTFORD — Puerto Ricans forced from their homes by Hurricane Maria and now living here will be the focus of a new effort aimed at getting them to register as Connecticut voters. Secretary of the State Denise W. Merrill on Wednesday joined leading lawmakers during a State Capitol news conference to announce the effort. “U.S. citizens do not lose their right to vote just because they lost their homes to a devastating natural disaster. In fact, by registering to vote in Connecticut, these families will now be able to vote in federal elections, and have more of a say in public affairs,” Merrill said. She plans to work with state lawmakers, community groups and local government to reach out to the Puerto Rican families.
