Kennedy Center launches its 2018 calendar

BRIDGEPORT — The second floor of the Margaret E. Morton Government Center transformed into a gallery Thursday evening with artists mingling among family and friends. Golden narwhals swam in a blue and green ocean. A Mondrian-like grid of colors on a blue background caught eyes, as did dancers pirouetting against a rainbow of blue, brown, cranberry, red and tan. All the art is for sale. More than 200 people were expected to gather during the launch of the Kennedy Center’s annual calendar — “A Unique Perspective.” “It’s like the Academy Awards for our artists,” said Marty Schwartz, president and CEO of the Kennedy Center. “It gives us an opportunity to showcase the great talents of our artists.

Bridgeport police chief questioned at CONECT assembly

BRIDGEPORT — City Police Chief Armando Perez said he was expecting a small gathering. But the Congregations Organized for a New Connecticut assembly Thursday night was anything but small. The meeting room of the Islamic Community Center — which hosted the event — was filled to the brim for CONECT’s “We’ll Rise” Assembly which began around 7:45 p.m. More than 200 community members from Norwalk to New Haven occupied all the available seats and spilled over onto the sides of the room against the walls. CONECT is a broad-based community organization composed of 25 churches, synagogues, temples and mosques from New Haven and Fairfield counties. Thursday marked six years since the organization was founded in Bridgeport in 2011.

Senate delays vote on landmark GOP tax bill

Connecticut Democrats lashed out at the prospect of Senate approval of the GOP tax bill, which would represent a huge win for President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill. “This is a terrible bill,” said Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., at a rally against passage Thursday. “From beginning to end, this bill is an epic disaster for the American people.” Kevin Sullivan, commissioner of the state Department of Revenue Services, called the Senate bill a “partisan fiscal lynching” a majority of Americans do not support.

Candidates say Bassick election called off

BRIDGEPORT — A controversial parent election scheduled for Friday at Bassick High School has been called off, according to two of the candidates running for president. Albert Benejan, the current president of the Bassick Parent Teacher Student Organization said school officials notified him Thursday afternoon that the election will be put off until the spring. Bassick Principal Byron Williams had arranged for the December 1 election, saying Benejan’s two-year term was up. The election was to be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the school. Benejan insist his term ran until March 2018 and that a committee of students, staff and parents at Bassick — not the principal should control the election.

Bridgeport man recalls homeless nights, helping hands

BRIDGEPORT — Willie Thomas Miller Jr.’s one-bedroom apartment on Freeman Street is a far cry from the public transit stations where he used to sleep. After serving more than 18 years on robbery and drug charges in Texas, the now-70-year-old Miller found himself homeless in Connecticut in 2014, walking the streets of Bridgeport all night. He was using heroin and had nowhere to go, and he lived that way for a year and a half. “I was ashamed to be homeless,” Miller, a Norwalk native, said. “There are people who probably didn’t even know I was homeless, because I never told them I was homeless. The only thing I had to throw people off...was how I dressed because I had (clothes in) storage.

Lumaj, now a candidate, stakes out the right flank in the governor’s race

FAIRFIELD — The latest entrant into the governor’s race is not cast from the Rockefeller Republican mold as many of his moderate rivals — a badge of honor for Peter Lumaj. The immigration lawyer from Fairfield, who fled the Communist regime in his native Albania in the late 1980s, registered as a candidate for the state’s top office Wednesday after testing the waters for more than year. Lumaj, who captured the GOP nomination for secretary of the state in 2014 but lost in the general election, is touting his conservative credentials to Republicans. He is a staunch supporter of Donald Trump’s immigration policy, from withholding funding for sanctuary cities to ending a program that protects so-called “dreamers” from deportation.

DOJ: Bridgeport housing authority to pay $10,000 after lawsuit settlement

The authority was ordered Thursday to pay the victim of the lawsuit $10,000 as a part of the settlement, the DOJ said. Goodwill to hold grand opening in Fairfield on Friday

FAIRFIELD — For weeks, Bridgeport resident Tony Bermudez has traveled past Kings Plaza on his way to neighboring businesses, each time passing by a relatively new sign for a Goodwill store. Like other shoppers, curiosity and a love for great deals finally drew him into the store, where he found racks and shelves filled with donated, recycled and reused items at Fairfield’s first Goodwill store and donation station. “This is my kind of zone, especially if you can get a pair of pants for five bucks,” he said. “I mean how can you beat that, especially in 2017?” The store has been open since September while construction was finishing up.

BRIDGEPORT -A Superior Court judge ordered the city to hold a third primary for the North End council seat, ruling city election officials violated state law and the head of the Democratic Party subverted the law. Robert Keeley, who lost the primary on Nov. 14 by 18 votes for the seat in the 133rd district against a Democratic Party-endorsed candidate, will now be back on the campain trail. “I’m going to be knocking on doors again” said Keeley moments after Judge Barbara Bellis’ decision. Manhattan luxury with New England views in Shelton

SHELTON — On a recent afternoon, the section of the Far Mill River behind 8 Trout Creek Road flowed more calmly and quietly than usual. It was, as ever, in constant motion. In fact, the view of the river is one of the things homeowner Cynthia Barrett has always loved about the town house, nestled in the Aspen Ridge Estates development in Shelton’s Huntington section. Usually, she said, the water is a bit more active, particularly when there’s rain or snow around. “When we moved here, the river was roaring like an ocean,” Barrett said. The Barretts, who are planning to move into a senior community, are selling the home, which is listed at $759,000.

Letter: Proposed compromise on anthem

Proposed compromise on anthem After another football-full weekend, beginning week 12 of the NFL, the question about standing or kneeling for our national anthem is still debated and politicized. I personally could never kneel during its playing, but I do understand the rights of those who do. However, on balance I cannot understand nor sympathize with those who stand for the flags who fought against the principles, interests and freedoms of the United States. I think therefore that an agreement could be reached, for all pro and amateur sports from football to NASCAR, NBA and golf whereby everyone should always but always stand for the Star Spangled Banner.

Dan Haar: Why spend millions on beaches and arenas? Lots of reasons

Silver Sands State Park in Milford may seem like a pristine, grassy marsh leading to a Long Island Sound beach if you walk along the boardwalk and don’t look too closely. In fact, the park that attracts 250,000 people a year is built on an old town landfill and the former site of 75 houses that were destroyed in a 1955 storm. The state turned that mess into a park over many decades. Now the state is about to spend $9.1 million on another round of upgrades, including a maintenance building that will save money on moving equipment around, more parking, food concessions, a lifeguard station and, hold on to your shorts — bathrooms.

These are not particularly happy times for Connecticut Democrats in King Donald’s Court. The GOP’s beloved tax bill could pass the Senate, maybe as early as Thursday. The Fix NICS Act, bipartisan legislation to beef up the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), might actually win congressional approval.

State heads to court for East Windsor casino

Gov. Dannel Malloy’s administration has filed a federal lawsuit aimed at allowing the Moehagan and Mashantucket Pequot Indian tribes to move ahead with their joint East Windsor casino. The lawsuit, if successful, would put to rest uncertainty over the project caused by the U.S. Department of Interior. That agency is required to review and signe off on the changes to the tribes’ existing gambling compact with the state. That will allow the tribes to team up on a third casino without jeopardizing the slots revenue each pays Connecticut from their respective Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods gambling destinations, built in the 1990s in the southeastern section of the state.

Shea ruled after a 90-minute argument, that the 2013 ban on felons participating in public financing does not limit Ganim’s access to to the campaign. “I agree with the defendant (the state elections commission) and I therefore, deny plantiff’s (Gamin) request to a summary judgement.” Lawyers for Ganim - re-elected mayor in 2015 following a federal prison sentence for public corruption - say that since he served his prison time and has again become a voter and public official, he should have full access to the public financing.

NIH: Trauma-based mental illness may be passed to offspring

Just like hair color, eye color, and risks for certain illness, trauma can be passed from generation to generation — even to those who didn’t directly experience the traumatic event. That’s according to a new study out of the National Institutes of Health, which analyzed adults whose parents evacuated Finland as children during World War II. The study, which appeared in JAMA Psychiatry, was conducted by researchers at the National Institutes of Health, Uppsala University in Sweden, and Helsinki University in Finland. According to a news release from NIH, the research team found that daughters of female evacuees had the same high risk for mental health disorders as their mothers, even though they did not experience the same adversity.

Trumbull’s Tim Herbst thanks supporters, moves on to governor’s race

TRUMBULL — After eight years in the town’s top office, outgoing First Selectman Tim Herbst is turning his attention to his run for governor, fulfilling a promise he made his late grandmother. “Although I am moving on and trying to move up, Trumbull will always be my home,” Herbst said. Friends, family, Town Council members and other officials gathered at Tashua Knolls Golf Course Tuesday to honor Herbst during his last week in office with speeches and a video tribute. Herbst served four terms as first selectman, but did not run for re-election to focus on his campaign to be Connecticut’s next governor. Democrat Vicki Tesoro will be sworn into the first selectman’s office on Monday. Herbst’s tenure has not been without controversy.

CT senate Dems man barricades against tax bill

WASHINGTON — Connecticut’s Democratic senators are helping to man the barricades against the GOP tax bill, which moved to the Senate floor on Tuesday and could get a vote this week depending on whether Republicans can count the 50 votes needed for passage. But neither Sens. Richard Blumenthal nor Chris Murphy are sure their side can block approval, which would move it closer to President Trump’s desk since the House approved its version two weeks ago. “It’s a bait and switch bill,” said Blumenthal. “But I think (Republican Senate leaders) will leave no horse-trading and deal-making undone to achieve this bill because it’s the only accomplishment they will have for the entire year.

Bridgeport Central seniors challenged with new scholarship from Class of 1987

BRIDGEPORT — Central High School’s Class of 1987 grew up before the dawn of social media but still managed to keep in touch, according to Martin Barrett, a member of the class. “Our class theme song, ‘ Never Say Goodbye,’ by Bonjovi truly speaks for our class,” said Barrett. “We never said goodbye.” Three decades later, many individuals from the class are strong leaders, holding to responsibility, accountability, adaptability and so many other internal skill sets outside of their academic achievements, according to Barrett. Sen. Slossberg: Leave Silver Sands the way it is

MILFORD — Visitors to Silver Sands State Park are presented with a rustic beach environment that hasn’t changed a lot since it became a state park in 1960. Those who go there still must suffer the indignities of portable toilets, and food and drink must be brought with you, or you’ll go hungry and thirsty. For years, the state Dept. of Energy and Environmental Protection has had plans to upgrade the place to make it more like Connecticut’s other shorefront parks, but a fired-up Gayle Slossberg, the state senator from Milford, on Tuesday blasted that idea, one that that would add a concession stand and upgrade visitor amenities.

Ganim fights for public financing in gov’s bid

HARTFORD — Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim claims that a 2013 law barring felons from the state’s public-financing program violates his constitutional rights and creates a competitive disadvantage in his nascent gubernatorial campaign. If Ganim, 58, fails in his request Wednesday before United States District Court Judge Michael P. Shea, he could possibly blame Ernest E. Newton II, the former state lawmaker - a fellow Bridgeporter - whose pending 2012 campaign-corruption case was cited by state lawmakers in prohibiting corrupt public officials from accessing the voluntary Citizens’ Election Program (CEP).

Flu cases rising in state, but not widespread yet

The number of flu cases in Connecticut is climbing, though it hasn’t yet been declared widespread in the state. According to statistics released by the state Department of Public Health on Tuesday, 96 people had tested positive for the flu, as of Nov. 18, up from 85 the week before. The flu is still classified as “local” in the state, meaning outbreaks of influenza or increases in influenza-like illness and recent laboratory-confirmed influenza are concentrated in a single region of the state. So far, the bulk of confirmed flu cases, 44, have been in Fairfield County. Hartford County is a distant second, with 24.

Lamont testing the waters for governor

Don’t call him a Dan Malloy enabler. Dan Haar: GE’s digital retreat means it might have stayed in Fairfield

Listening to General Electric CEO John Flannery talk about paring back the company’s ambitions, it’s hard not to think he would have kept the headquarters in Connecticut, the state where he grew up. Look past Flannery’s halving of the dividend, grounding of the corporate jet fleet and plan to shed $20 billion in assets as he focuses the industrial businesses on three main areas — health care, aviation and power generation.

FDA urges caution when buying laser toys for kids

The holiday season has kicked off in earnest, and with a new “Star Wars” movie on the horizon, some parents might be considering getting kids infatuated with light sabers a laser as a gift. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration strongly urges anyone thinking about buying laser toys to consider the possible safety risks. According to the FDA, when operated unsafely, or without certain controls, the highly-concentrated light from lasers — even those in toy — can cause serious eye injuries, or even blindness. The danger exists not just to those using the laser, but to those nearby. The FDA’s concerns were such that, in 2014, the agency issued a guidance document (PDF 60K) on the safety of children’s toy laser products.

Setting the Table in Historic Style: Connecticut Views on Staffordshire China

By Nancy Finlay for Your Pubic Media

When setting the table for Thanksgiving dinner, you probably bring out your best china and glassware, perhaps including some pieces that have been passed down for generations.

Plate with View of Montevideo, the estate of Daniel Wadsworth

Plate with View of Montevideo, the estate of Daniel Wadsworth. Made by William Adams & Sons, Staffordshire, ca. 1835. Based on a composition by Thomas Cole – Connecticut Historical Society, 1954.28.0

Plate with Soldiers Memorial Arch

Plate with Soldiers Memorial Arch. Made by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons, Staffordshire, 1896 – Connecticut Historical Society, 1957.9.0

The Connecticut views that appear on some old pieces of the Staffordshire china in the collections of the Connecticut Historical Society now provide quaint glimpses of bygone times. This was not the case when the china was new. They were contemporary views, showing Connecticut as it appeared at the time when they were first issued. The English potters produced sets of this china for the American market, targeting a very specific local audience, who would readily have recognized the scenes, either because they knew the sites themselves or because they were familiar with them from contemporary engravings.

Most of these early views were based on engravings published in London in 1831. They include two works by Thomas Cole (1801-1848), the well-known Hudson River School painter: a panorama of Hartford from the far side of the Connecticut River, and a view of Daniel Wadsworth’s estate, Montevideo, on Talcott Mountain. Wadsworth, the founder of the Wadsworth Atheneum, was among Cole’s earliest patrons. Views of the Samuel Russell House in Middletown and the New Haven Green are by Alexander Jackson Davis (1803-1892), then a young architect at the beginning of his career. The engravings were directly transferred to the china and applied to a variety of different forms—cups, saucers, plates, bowls, platters, pitchers, etc.—in a variety of different colors. They appear on china made by some of the best known English potters, including William Adams & Son, Job & John Jackson, and Enoch Wood & Sons.

Later views on Staffordshire china continued this tradition. Late 19th-century china produced by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons depicts the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Arch in Hartford less than 10 years after it was completed.

So, when setting your table for the holidays this year, think about the history contained in these old dishes.

Nancy Finlay, formerly Curator of Graphics at the Connecticut Historical Society, is the editor of Picturing Victorian America: Prints by the Kellogg Brothers of Hartford, Connecticut, 1830-1880.

Newington youth football team returns as defending champs

NEWINGTON -- Back from yet another victorious season, the Newington Knights 8U football team was welcomed home Saturday to a crowd of parents and fans.

“It was surprising and exciting,” said quarterback Dominic Creaco. The 27 player team made up of 7 to 9-year-old kids made the playoffs to take on teams from across the country in Massachusetts, going 13 and 0.

“They played with be best teams out there, and ours are one of them,” said Newington Knights VP of football Eileen Colonese.

The group was led by first year head coach Matt Gardiner, assistant coach to last years national championship team, who took the title in Indiana.

“It feels awesome, there was a lot of things I wanted to do last year and implement and the boys just accepted and excelled and excelled, I couldn’t keep up with how fast they were growing as football players," said Gardiner.

Head Coach Gardiner expressed his hope to continue the success of the team. “Hope to keep this thing going, that would be great," said Coach Gardiner.

Rise of rich candidates for governor rankles some in GOP

Never held elected office? No problem. Grassroots support? Overrated. But if you can scrounge up $75,000 — tip money for a hedge fund manager — you too can be on the debate stage when Connecticut Republicans hold their first gubernatorial debate on Dec. 6. at Windsor High School. The inclusion of self-funders at the debate, as well as a private forum in Greenwich two days before for gubernatorial hopefuls, has led to criticism that some political neophytes are being allowed to buy their way into the race. Several of the GOP contenders who have spent almost a year raising small-dollar contributions to qualify for public campaign financing under Connecticut’s clean-elections program have voiced reservations about the process.

Dan Haar: Getting a bead on one successful retailer’s challenges

It’s hard to predict the flow of customers at Beadworks, a make-your-own jewelry retailer in South Norwalk, Fairfield and Philadelphia. The stores can be dead and then, as one employee put it, the (mythical) Beadworks Bus pulls up to the door — with little reason for the timing. That’s true for most of in-the-flesh retail, of course, and many other types of businesses in the Amazon-Uber age. Abigail Wall knows that well, as the Beadworks owner and as a former business consultant with Boston Consulting Group. But it’s espcially true at Beadworks, nowhere more than at the original store location on South Norwalk’s Washington Street.

Westport doc uses ‘O-Shot’ to restore sexual satisfaction for women

WESTPORT — What does an orgasm have in common with smooth skin? Both can now be achieved with the help of medical science. Westport plastic surgeon Ellen Mahony is one of growing group of physicians who offer the provocatively named O-Shot — and yes, the “O” does stand for orgasm. “(Loss of sexual satisfaction) is a complaint a lot of people have,” said Mahony, who has 30 years experience in her field. In the procedure, a concentrated version of the patient’s own blood is injected into the clitoris and inside the vagina, with the aim of restoring blood flow, reversing tissue atrophy and improving nerve response. The end result, Mahony said, is improved sexual function and urinary continence.

Connecticut Post says goodbye to 410 State St. — and moves blocks away

BRIDGEPORT — Bullets, glue pots, dead editors, false teeth and Girl Scouts have all played a part in the storied history of the Connecticut Post. This weekend, the Post is moving the last of its local reporters, editors and photographers at 410 State Street to an address three blocks away at 1057 Broad St. Most of the other staffers from the building’s four floors had moved earlier to Hearst Connecticut Media’s new headquarters at Merritt 7 Corporate Park in Norwalk. Several of the Connecticut Post’s writers have been working in the brick-and-mortar building for 30 years or more, so Friday was a bittersweet day as memories were dredged up from long-forgotten desk drawers.

City hopes third time is charm for thermal loop

BRIDGEPORT — Officials believe they have salvaged a major economic and environmental project for the downtown aimed at providing cheaper heat to neighborhood residents and large tenants like Housatonic Community College, the University of Bridgeport, the Webster Bank Arena and People’s Bank. Now the initiative just has to get through state utility regulators. “The bottom line is it’s not a done deal,” said state Rep. Steven Stafstrom, though he said he is optimistic. The thermal loop — underground pipes that would pump otherwise wasted heat from sites like a to-be-built fuel cell and the Wheelabrator trash-to-energy plant to downtown and South End buildings — was first initiated under former Mayor Bill Finch.
