Lumaj, now a candidate, stakes out the right flank in the governor’s race

FAIRFIELD — The latest entrant into the governor’s race is not cast from the Rockefeller Republican mold as many of his moderate rivals — a badge of honor for Peter Lumaj. The immigration lawyer from Fairfield, who fled the Communist regime in his native Albania in the late 1980s, registered as a candidate for the state’s top office Wednesday after testing the waters for more than year. Lumaj, who captured the GOP nomination for secretary of the state in 2014 but lost in the general election, is touting his conservative credentials to Republicans. He is a staunch supporter of Donald Trump’s immigration policy, from withholding funding for sanctuary cities to ending a program that protects so-called “dreamers” from deportation.
