The competition among mayors with gubernatorial ambitions has ratcheted up, with New Britain Republican Erin Stewart rebuffing the idea of being someone else’s running mate to explore the race herself. Stewart, 30, revealed her political plans on a Facebook Live Monday, further congesting a male-dominated field that could eventually pit the mayors of Bridgeport, Hartford, Danbury, Shelton and, now New Britain, against each other. That doesn’t include former Trumbull First Selectman Tim Herbst, to whom Stewart has been linked as a potential running mate, along with longtime Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton. A sixth mayor, Middletown Democrat Dan Drew, dropped out of the race earlier this month.
