They’ve been no-shows for the debates. Now, there is rampant speculation in Republican circles that a pair of mostly self-funded gubernatorial candidates, David Stemerman and Bob Stefanowski, could bypass the party’s spring nominating convention and go straight to a primary. Each would have to collect about 9,600 signatures of registered Republicans (2 percent of party members) by early June to qualify for the August primary. While a petition drive is considered no easy task, the consensus in the GOP is that the Greenwich hedge fund mogul Stemerman and the one-time UBS executive Stefanowski have the dough to pull it off.
