Jonathan Gonzalez-Cruz prepared himself to feel anger and frustration as a Dreamer watching the State of the Union address. And President Donald Trump did not surprise the 21-year-old college student from Wallingford. Trump didn’t utter a single empathetic word for Gonzalez-Cruz and others of the 800,000 who were brought into the United States illegally as children before mid-2007 and gained some protection under former President Barack Obama in 2012. What Trump did say — equating the Dreamers to gang criminals — sparked ire across the country. But for Gonzalez-Cruz, Trump’s insult wasn’t just about the Dreamers’ fight to stay in the land where they were raised and the political showdown over it.
