When it came to casting a ballot in 2016, Steve Obsitnik voted like a father, not like a future gubernatorial candidate. Republican Steve Obsitnik said Tuesday that he did not vote for Donald Trump in 2016. He wrote in U.S. Sen. John McCain’s name instead. “I have two daughters 14 and 16, and I didn’t like a lot of the discord going on,” Obstinik said in an interview Tuesday. “So I sided with a former Marine Corps Academy graduate.” Obsitnik is one of five Republicans running for governor in a year when allegiance with the president has become a kind of litmus test. While some other Republican candidates boasted in debates about their votes for Trump in 2016, Obsitnik has not previously spelled out his ballot choice.
