A surveying operation will require closing part of the Heros (aka West Rock) Tunnel on the Wilbur Cross Parkway in New Haven and Woodbridge starting next week. The 1,200-foot tunnel that opened in 1949, has four lanes of traffic going north and south through two tunnels under West Rock Ridge State Park. More than 75,000 vehicle a day pass through the tunnels. The survey work is needed to develop plans to either replace or rehabilitate and widen the existing tunnels. Among the many problems with the old tunnels, is leaking water from above that has caused the concrete to crack and chip.
