BRIDGEPORT — It’s been eight years since two Bridgeport firefighters lost their lives while battling a fire in the city, and the department hasn’t forgotten. Fire Lt. Steven Velasquez, 40, and firefighter Michel Baik, 49, were killed in a fire on July 24, 2018. “We constantly use them as a reminder to say this is the real deal and things can go bad in an instant,” said Fire Chief Richard Thode on Wednesday. He said the department will not forget the two men who gave their lives while working to extinguish a fire at an Elmwood Avenue residence. “It’s important to remember them and what happened,” Thode said. “They made a big sacrifice for the city.
