WASHINGTON — This just in from Hearst summer intern Sarah Roach: Lane Murdock didn’t think her petition to protest gun violence would spread like wildfire. But the clarion call from the Ridgefield High School sophomore morphed into more than 2,500 fellow students walking out of class on the anniversary of the 1999 Columbine H.S. massacre. It’s no surprise that high schools were so quick to join in — the petition was created on the night of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Florida that left 14 dead. Within days, Murdock assumed a leadership position over a nationwide movement among high school students to curb gun violence, an extra spark on the momentum already begun by Parkland students.
