Jan. 1 marked the start of a Connecticut law banning employers in most cases from asking people how much they made in their last jobs. That’s viewed as a big step for pay equity for women and minority group members because, hey, if you know someone made $40,000 as a vice president in her last gig, you’ll figure you can pay her 50 grand and call it a deal. Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz sees it as a huge advance for women, in her new role as chair of the Council on Women and Girls, which will have its first meeting in February after all the members are named. I talked with Bysiewicz about subtle ways salaries are set.
