Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti, a petitioning Republican candidate for governor, routinely claims on stage and on his campaign website that Shelton is home to 25,000 commuters, implying that number has grown significantly during his 26-year tenure as mayor. “On any given day, I have 25,000 people who commute in to work. We have become an employment hub in the state,” Lauretti said during a GOP debate in New Canaan last month. “I run a community that’s thriving. On any given day, I have 25,000 people that commute into my city because I’ve built an economic base,” he touted during the GOP debate in New Britain.
