Upcoming workers strike pressures legislators to act on contract, budget

HARTFORD — Some 2,400 workers who care for the disabled are planning to strike on May 7 — two days before the end of the legislative session — in order to pressure lawmakers into approving a new contract that would award them their first raises in years. The move squeezes Democrats and Republicans who are already struggling to negotiate a fiscal year 2019 budget in the last week and a half left in the session. A new contract is a “must have,” said House Majority Leader Matt Ritter, D-Hartford, on Thursday, and he expressed “confidence” that lawmakers would approve it.
