STEPNEY — A scammer called someone at the Stepney Volunteer Fire Department in an attempt to get money from them for a volunteer firefighter scam. The number that the call came from was 475-219-2354 and the name that pops up on the caller ID was “vol firefgters.” “Your volunteer firefighters do need your help, but they do not solicit by telephone,” fire officials said. “If you do wish to donate to your local fire department, by all means do so.” Donations can be done through sending a check, replying to local mailings and at any fundraising events publicized by departments. “Please support your local volunteer fire department,” officials said. “But not by giving these phone hucksters your credit card number.”
