BRIDGEPORT — A district decision not to hire substitute teachers during May as a cost cutting measure will have destructive consequences, city teachers predicted Monday. Members of the Bridgeport Education Association staged a news conference calling on the district to reverse the decision which they say will result in the loss of teaching and learning time. “Without substitutes we are not educating our children we are warehousing them,” said Gary Peluchette, president of the city’s teacher’s union. The only subs that will be provided will be long-term subs already in place, and subs for teachers attending professional development covered by a grant and teachers attending legally mandated special education meetings.
