State police recently hosted the Department of Homeland Security regional explosives detection dog initiative. Thursday morning, state police K9 Whim, one of the agency’s explosives detection dogs, was joined by 24 other K9 teams at Rentschler Field in Hartford. Participating agencies included Stamford police, New Haven police, various Massachusetts police departments and Vermont State Police. The training, facilitated by DHS Science and Technology Directorate, is an outreach effort to state and local law enforcement to improve explosive detection canine team training efficiency and effectiveness, state police officials said. The 25 K9 teams participated in classroom and experiential training.
