In the minutes after the rejection of Supreme Court Justice Andrew McDonald’s bid to become chief justice, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy condemned opposition lawmakers, both Democrats and Republicans, for politicizing the normal process of judicial appointments. Speaking to reporters, Malloy focused in particular on Sen. Michael A. McLachlan, a fifth-term Republican from Danbury, whom he tagged for “homophobic and biased statements” while an adviser to Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton over 15 years ago. “In point of fact, he is on record as saying to people about a gay man who worked in the mayor’s office that he, Sen. McLachlan, might go home and beat his wife on a regular basis, but he wouldn’t come in an talk about it in the office,” Malloy said.
