HARTFORD — Less than 24 hours after Senate Republicans and one Democrat voted to block Supreme Court Justice Andrew McDonald from becoming chief justice, Senate Democrats are calling on the naysayers to reconsider. In a Capitol press conference Wednesday described as a “last ditch effort” by Senate President Pro Tempore Martin Looney, D-New Haven, Democrats called the rejection of McDonald for chief justice a “grave mistake” and a “travesty.” “This is an extraordinary and historic action; however, in order to preserve the independence of Connecticut’s judicial system and ensure that petty partisan politics does not infect the judiciary, the senate should reconsider Justice McDonald’s nomination,” Looney said.
