Fifty years ago baseball was in turmoil. The commissioner was blamed for halfhearted responses to the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy. The Vietnam war was drafting the top prospects. And averages like Jose Altuve’s .346 or home run numbers like Aaron Judge’s 53 were only hitters’ dreams. Hitter’s nightmares were filled with pitchers like Denny McLain’s 31 wins (the first 30-game winner since Dizzy Dean in 1934), Bob Gibson and his 1.12 earned run average (the lowest since 1914) and Don Drysdale’s unheard of 58 2/3 consecutive shutout innings.
