HARTFORD — If federal prohibitions on sports betting are lifted this year, Connecticut lawmakers want to be prepared to welcome the new industry to the state. Americans illegally wager $150 billion on sports a year, according to the American Gaming Association. If that market was legalized, it could become a source of revenue for the cash-strapped state, like the lottery is. “It’s important that Connecticut is poised to compete in the marketplace should sports betting become legalized,” said Rep. Joe Verrengia, D-West Hartford, chair of the Public Safety and Security Committee, which oversees gambling.
