BRIDGEPORT - Three cab drivers go on trial in federal court Tuesday morning charged with kidnapping and exhorting money from recent immigrants to this country. Lucilo Cabrera, 44, Carlos Hernandez, 53, and Francisco Betancourt, 67, are accused of approaching women, men and children from Central American countries who did not speak English and were seeking asylum in the U.S. and taking them for a ride until the immigrants came up with the exorbitant fares. The cabbies’ lawyers, Gary Mastronardi, John Gulash and Chris Duby, declined comment on the case. The case is being prosecuted by assistant U.S. attorneys Vanessa Richards and Jacabed Rodriguez-Coss.
