DEEP: Swimming areas closed at some CT state parks

Swimming areas at some Connecticut state parks have closed as further water testing is completed, according to a state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection water quality report.

Swimming areas at Rocky Neck State Park and Wharton Brook State Park are both closed and anticipated to undergo retesting Wednesday and have results Thursday, the report said. Gay City State Park’s swimming area also has closed; water results are anticipated for Wednesday after Tuesday’s retesting, according to the report.

Department staff take samples of water at swimming areas as well as beaches at state parks each week, which are then tested for “certain indicator bacteria,” the report said.

“Indicator bacteria are not disease-causing pathogens but are one of the tools used by public health and environmental protection authorities to evaluate the potential for contamination of waterbodies,” the report notes.

The report also said that storm damage has closed Wadsworth Falls State Park, and maintenance has closed Mashamoquet Brook State Park’s swim area.
