Klarides files to ‘consider’ a run for governor

Themis Klarides, the former Republican leader of the state House of Representatives who didn’t run for re-election last year so she could run for governor, announced Wednesday she is taking first step toward the higher office.

Klarides, a delegate for former President Donald Trump in 2016 bt not in 2020, faces tough hurdles in the form of likely runs by fellow Republican Bob Stefanowski, the party’s 2018 candidate who ran a strong race; then, if she beats Stefanowski, a general election against a likely re-election bid from Gov. Ned Lamont, whose popularity has surged in coronavirus.

In a statement, Klarides said she planned to file paperwork with the State Elections Enforcement Commission Wednesday that would allow her to spend her own money as she considers a run for governor. The commission had not received the filing as of 11:15 a.m.

“At this point, I will not be accepting contributions or conducting any fundraising as I conduct my due diligence,” Klarides said. “I believe deeply in the potential of our state, and that the status quo of the Lamont administration has failed our families. I look forward to listening to voters across the state as I carefully consider what is best for our state, our people, and my family.”

Klarides is in Tennessee this week attending the Republican Governors Association’s spring conference and is unavailable for interviews, said Sebastian Rougemont, a spokesman who has served in several roles in Trump’s presidential campaigns.

Klarides opened up a rally for Donald Trump at Sacred Heart University during his first presidential run in 2016.
