State police investigating officer involved shooting in Hartford

A man police say was armed with a rifle and a handgun was shot and wounded by an officer Saturday evening in Hartford.

Police responded to Gilman Street after a 911 call reporting a man with a gun shortly before 9 p.m. Officers said they found a man, whose identity has not been released, armed with “an assault rifle with a scope, as well as a handgun with a flashlight mounted to it,” according to a release from Hartford Police Chief Jason Thody.

“It appears that the male did not comply with requests to drop his firearms,” and officers followed him into the back parking lot of 14-16 Gilman St.

“After pleas to drop the weapon, an officer verbalized that the individual was pointing his weapon, and fired her weapon once, striking him,” according to the release late Saturday.

The man was taken to Hartford Hospital, where police said he is listed in critical condition.

“The exact details are yet to be determined and this information is subject to further investigation,” according to police, who said the investigation is being handled by the State’s Attorney for the Ansonia-Milford Judicial District and the State Police Eastern District Major Crimes Squad.

Thody said that body camera footage from multiple officers will be handed over to the State’s Attorney, and said Hartford Police will work to have the footage released as soon as possible.

“We are cooperating fully with the State as the investigation into this shooting begins, and we will work with the state to release as much information to the public as we can,” Thody said in a release.
