Veggie sandwiches sold at Aldi stores throughout the country — including Connecticut — are being recalled because they may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes and salmonella. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, J&J Snack Foods Handheld Corp. of Holly Ridge, N.C., is voluntarily recalling two lots of Fit & Active Southwest Veggie Stuffed Sandwiches because of the contamination concerns. Salmonella and listeria are both organisms that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact their health care provider.
