If you are 65 or over, you likely carry your Medicare card with you at all times — even though that card prominently displays your Social Security number. Your SSN is like gold for thieves, especially for cyberthieves. Now, after years of debate and planning, the government (the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) has started mailing out replacement Medicare cards with a new identification number called the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier. It is unique to you and has no relation to your SSN. Most people affected don’t know a new card is coming, according to a recent AARP- sponsored survey.
