HARTFORD — A group of consumer advocates are demanding Eversource drop a requested 15 percent rate increase for natural gas, noting the electric company is already reaping profits from new federal tax breaks and that gas costs are already high. "Eversource is on notice: if they persist in this unconscionable, massive rate increase I will help consumers in opposing it," said U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn, referring to a rate case before the state Public Utilities Regulatory Authority. "Consumers are watching and cannot afford this rate hike," Blumenthal said. "Eversource has reaped millions in federal tax breaks and has no justifiable reason for yet another sweeping rate hike." Eversource is requesting a 15.
