Motivated to make the Democratic party more inclusive of people of color, Hartford lawyer Arunan Arulampalam ended his bid for state treasurer Tuesday. His decision leaves two Democrats, endorsed candidate Shawn Wooden and challenger Dita Bhargava, to battle it out for their party’s nomination in August. “The tone around this race had the potential to get really divisive and conversations among our community and a lot of communities of color were getting divisive,” Arulampalam said in an interview Tuesday. “I thought it was the best thing for me to step aside.” On the Democratic side, the treasurer’s bid fielded the most candidates of color of any statewide race.
