DERBY-It’s more than just cannon fodder. To people like Jamie Cohen, the former chairman of the Valley Community Foundation, the discovery made while restoring one of the Green’s Civil War cannons is historical. But to Francis Miller its like finding the Holy Grail. “We’re used to pulling out mud, stones, beer bottles and soda cans,” said Miller, the directing conservator of Conserve Art in Hamden which is restoring the monument. “We never expected to find something like this.” So when Mike Donovan, his assistant conservator, was cleaning out the inside of one of the four Civil War cannons as part of the restoration, out rolled a canister shot. “A big iron nut also came out so I was a little skeptical at first,” said Miller.
