The world has come a long way since the 1970s. The changes to air quality, natural resources and water have remarkably improved over the last four decades, since the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency on Dec. 2, 1970, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. But, prior to the EPA establishment, a Wisconsin senator shaped the way for what we now celebrate worldwide on April 22 — Earth Day. On April 22, 1970, Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin started what would later be referred to as an environmental revolution, the DEEP said.
