HARTFORD — Faced with lawmakers upset over proposed rail fare hikes, gas tax increases and highway tolls, state transportation officials on Tuesday painted a bleak future of less road improvements and severe service cutbacks if more money is not found. "Without additional revenue we cannot sustain the transportation fund going forward," said James Redeker, commissioner of the state Department of Transportation. "The choices are tough," Redeker said. "It’s my job to identify the problem. But I don’t fix the revenue the side. It’s a tough choice as to how to get there." Redeker told the Transportation Committee that DOT already has over 400 vacancies, has canceled $4.
