Sen. Chris Murphy will meet with President Donald Trump at the White House Wednesday to discuss bipartisan ways to address gun violence in schools and elsewhere, with beefed-up background checks likely to be at the top of the agenda. Murphy, D-Conn., confirmed the 3 p.m. invite to reporters at the U.S. Capitol following the weekly policy lunch of Democratic senators. A spokesman described the meeting as “bipartisan.” Rep. Elizabeth Esty is also expected to be there but it is not yet clear who else has been invited. In addition to arming select teachers as a way of “hardening” schools — a non-starter for Murphy and other Democrats — Trump wants “strong background checks.
